01 Sep 2015 Fotolia Announces Discounts in Adobe Stock

Adobe has today announced a 20-day limited discount at Adobe Stock starting today. The discount is 50%, taking the price from $9.99 to $4.99 and equivalent in other currencies.  It applies only to single downloads, not subscriptions.

Contributors were informed by email today via Fotolia, and assured that the discount will be absorbed by Adobe, so contributor royalties will not be affected.

The New Regime

It’s surprising that Adobe is absorbing the discount, which is highly unusual in the microstock industry where royalty percentages are applied regardless of discounts and promotions that the companies run from time to time.

What’s also surprising is that contributors were informed. This confirms Adobe’s un-announced intention to be more respectful to contributors than Fotolia was known for historically.

As a much larger business, Adobe can afford to be more generous, but also needs to be so. They need to encourage contributors to resume uploading images to bring the Fotolia collection up to the quality level of Shutterstock, who remains their primary competitor.

At least for Fotolia I don’t recall discounts for customers who have been forwarded to the contributors. Maybe you have an example, I can’t think of one in the past though.
