He started Shutterstock as a personal portfolio featuring 30,000 of his own photos, later opening it up for other photographers to contribute. Oringer’s original photos have been removed over time as the quality standards increased. Shutterstock itself is known for pioneering and maintaining the subscription sales model and being the first microstock agency to sell video footage. Oringer has created their success as the only microstock agency exclusively using the subscription model.

Oringer is a computer programmer. He started his first company, SurfSecret, in 1997. SurfSecret created web privacy software and Oringer created his own website and ordering system to sell it online. All this while still a full time student living with his parents.
