01 Aug 2008 Microstock Earnings Report July 2008
The summer slowdown is producing mixed results so far this year. While some agencies are firmly in the grip of the season, others are defiantly rising. I recorded new records with three agencies this month! Overall, earnings we up around 8% on last month.
Agency | Earnings US$ | Portfolio Size | Return per Image |
Sell-through Rate % |
iStockphoto | 186.50 | 741 | 0.25 | 73 |
Shutterstock | 179.68 | 815 | 0.22 | 93 |
Dreamstime | 78.00 | 704 | 0.11 | 65 |
Fotolia | 125.89 | 600 | 0.21 | 47 |
StockXpert | 56.60 | 278 | 0.20 | 33 |
BigStockPhoto | 10.00 | 391 | 0.03 | 28 |
123rf | 9.73 | 294 | 0.03 | 18 |
Crestock | 15.25 | 309 | 0.05 | 22 |
Total: 661.65 | Avg: 0.14 | Avg: 47 |
Observations:
- No, I didn’t get the figures of Fotolia and Dreamstime mixed up. Two Extended License sales at Fotolia this month sent their chart skyward while some poor performance on my part saw my approval rating at Dreamstime plummet and my earnings went with it.
- New records were set by Fotolia, StockXpert and Crestock
- I reached 100 total sales at Crestock so my credit commission rose from 20% to 30%. This and a sharp increase in downloads meant I earned more than double my previous record at Crestock this month.

Posted at 13:03h, 01 AugustGreat numbers overall Lee! I think I’ve read that July is a down month for stock sales – historically, how does it rate overall? Last? 8% growth over last month is awesome given that July is a down month. My numbers were up this month over last month as well. Thanks for the reminder about the dreamstime search placement and approval rating – I’ve had good luck there over the last couple of months (about 89%) and that may explain my sales doubling there this month! 🙂

I had 17% earnings growth in July, but also a major shift between main players: IS went down and SS went up and took the lead. IS+SS are providing 78% of my income.
I took a week of vacations from microstock in July – paddling, racing and shooting just for fun.

Posted at 19:24h, 05 AugustHere are my stats for the year. I think I overcame the “Summer Slowdown” because I uploaded like CRAZY in May and June. How did you make your graphs? I want to try and make some. Great site.

Posted at 00:04h, 08 AugustHi Nick,
Uploading rapidly to overcome the summer slowdown has obviously worked for you – well done. However, I’ve seen evidence that it doesn’t work for everyone. I’d be interested to know if the difference was scale, something else or the difference between this year’s summer and that of last year.
I’m currently using the Google Chart API to create my charts, but I previously did them in a spreadsheet which is quicker (but not as pretty).
