01 Oct 2008 Microstock Earnings Report September 2008

More new records for my earnings in September as the hottest period of the microstock year slides into place. Total earnings broke last month’s new record for me this month with almost equal assistance from the Extended License fairy (thanks James for that term).

Microstock Earnings Chart - September 2008

Extended licenses in September were: iStockphoto 1, Shutterstock 1, Dreamstime 1, Fotolia 1, StockXpert 1.

September set a new record for total earnings and new highs at StockXpert and 123rf.

I also had my first sale at YayMicro for €2.50 (279 images) and finally started uploading my portfolio to CutCaster.

StockXpert and Photos.com

Jupiter Images are reporting early signs of success in the form of high sales numbers with the connection between StockXpert and photos.com. My little portfolio generated 14 subscription sales via photos.com to only 7 at StockXpert.

Setting Favorite Photos at 123rf

Back in June I started setting my ‘faving’ my images at 123rf on the recommendation of a fellow contributor. After a couple of weeks I checked, but didn’t notice any major or sudden change. However, looking at the above chart there is a clear upward trend in the past two months since I set my favs. It’s not yet conclusive that setting faves made the difference given other agencies are also trending upward for me, but its possibly a factor.

Your numbers from SXP look great! I guess my portfolio needs some time there – $15 only, but was really my 5th month with SXP.

I posted the September earnings report in my blog:
    http://www.pixelsaway.com/C911796005/E20081001062254/index.html

My two major earners: IS – the same as in August, SS – went up.

IS+SS contributed 69% to my earnings while during previous months it was about 76%. It means that smaller players were doing better: BME in DT, SXP and 123RF + some sales from Featurepics.

regarding the 123RF favorites, There might be something in this… for a long time i seem to have sold a lot of images that have been set in my 123rf favs… I am going to change them and see what happens. 🙂

How long have you been contributing to these agencies for, if you don’t mind me asking?

      Hi Mandy,

I saw your recent post ‘what is stock photography’. Not a bad summation. 🙂

I, along with my wife who did almost all of the early work, started contributing to microstock agencies in April 2005. I have to look up that date on my iStockphoto profile every time I get asked. You’d think I’d remember it by now.

Anway, that’s a long time to be earning so little, which is largely due to both my wife and I having other full time employment. Other microstock contributors have built earnings far higher than mine and in much less time.

Good luck with your venture into the stock photography world. I hope you find some useful information among the pages of my blog.

      -Lee
